In 2010 I worked with Propaganda Games to design the UI on Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned (Xbox 360, PS3 and PC). The game was announcement at 2009's Electronic Entertainment Expo, where it received a positive response. Sadly the game was cancelled several months before its planned release date.
The UI aesthetic was inspired by classic pirate looks; torn black sails, old parchment maps and hordes of treasure.
Torn parchment helped establish a really fun and thematic appearance in our UI. Learning how to create this look played a big role in some of my future UI projects, especially on Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season One.
On top of creating the UI graphics, I modeled and animated a variety of flags in 3DS Max for some of the more dramatic of the popups in the game, like the 'Discovery' flag below.
We drew inspiration for the icons from Disney style guides as well as from graphic novels.
The Quest Log was a real challenge to create as the pages had to flip convincingly.
Below you can see some footage of the E3 demo.
